Dementia seminar proves popular with Foundation Trust members
Our latest ‘Medicine for Members’ seminar for Foundation Trust members—‘Addressing and managing the dementia epidemic’—was held on Tuesday 1 May.
This was the second in a new series of free heath events exclusively for patients and members of the public who have joined our Foundation Trust as members.
Dr Richard Morgan, Consultant Physician at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and Dr Claudia Wald, Consultant Psychiatrist with the Kensington & Chelsea Memory Service, were the keynote speakers.
The event attracted 50 people, which is the capacity of the Postgraduate Lecture Theatre where the seminar was held, and the level of interest shown by Foundation Trust members in the topic of dementia means that we plan to repeat it in the near future.
Feedback from members who attended the seminar was overwhelmingly positive with the vast majority saying they found the event useful and they would recommend future ‘Medicine for Members’ events to friends and family.
We plan to hold more ‘Medicine for Members’ seminars throughout the year focusing on a range of health issues—these will be publicised to Foundation Trust members in future editions of our magazine Trust News and our monthly e-newsletter Members’ News for members who have provided us with their email addresses.
What the attendees said
- “The more events like this the better, especially for carers who need support and information.”
- “This was a welcome opportunity to review progress in dementia treatments.”
- “A difficult subject well presented.”

We launched a series of health events for Foundation Trust members—'Medicine for Members'. The first event was a Bowel Cancer Awareness seminar at 5:30pm on Wednesday 22 February in the Postgraduate Lecture Theatre on the Lower Ground Floor of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Members came along to hear our experts talk about how to reduce their risk of developing bowel cancer and what signs to keep an eye out for. The seminar coincided with a major new Government publicity campaign to encourage awareness and therefore early diagnosis.
‘Who do you think WE are?’ consultation gets great response
Thank you to all Foundation Trust members and representatives from groups of patients and hospital volunteers who helped develop our values by taking part in the 'Who do you think WE are?' consultation in February 2012.
More than 800 people voted for their top four values from a shortlist of 12 options and three focus groups for Foundation Trust members were well attended.
The Trust’s values, as agreed by the Trust Board on 29 March, are:
- Respectful
- Safe
- Kind
- Excellent
Our values will define what patients should expect when they are cared for at Chelsea and Westminster and how all staff can help to meet these expectations.
