Friends Patient Support Project

What is the project?

The Friends of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital charity have provided the funds to set up a patient support project at the hospital, which is run by a member of staff and a team of volunteers.

We know how a simple visit or some company during your appointment, on the ward or at mealtimes can make a huge difference to someone’s experience in hospital. The Friends Patient Support team is here to make our patients' visits or stays as pleasant as possible.

Our volunteers can visit any patient who needs support, companionship or would like a friendly chat. We focus on supporting patients at mealtimes as we know how important nutrition is as part of the healing process. Hospital wards can feel quite scary and intimidating, particularly for our more elderly patients.

Volunteers work alongside our excellent and dedicated clinical staff providing a human touch and making sure that patients are as comfortable as possible during their stay.

Request additional support

Please note: This service is currently only available at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

‘Request additional support’ is another service offered by the Friends Patient Support Project.

Clicking on the ‘Request additional support’ button in the Your Hospital Visit section of the website enables patients, family and friends to access the following services:

  • ‘By Your Side’—provides support to patients with additional needs when attending outpatient appointments on their own
  • ‘Visiting Service’—provides visits for lonely or vulnerable patients while in hospital
  • 'Delivering Messages'—volunteers can deliver messages to patients from family and friends, and keep the lines of communication open, during their time in hospital
  • 'Mealtime Assistance'—volunteers offer mealtime support to elderly and vulnerable patients
  • 'TimeOut'—volunteers take patients outside the wards to give them a break from the clinical environment (this service is available only after clinical approval)

Once you have completed the form we will do the rest.
