Clinical skills

We have two Clinical Skills Laboratories, one in the Centre for Clinical Practice (CW site) and the second in our Education Centre (WMUH site). Our team deliver teaching sessions in an environment for instructional teaching combined with hands-on practical application.

Each  laboratory is equipped with facilities for training in a variety of skills suitable for beginning practitioners and students through to advanced clinicians.

Part-task trainers and models can be utilised for practicing interventions such as suturing, catheterisation, venepuncture and cannulation as well as patient examination techniques.

Both Clinical Skills Laboratories allows participants to develop high levels of competence and confidence in a safe, risk-free environment.

Please see our list of training available:

a) Nasogastric tube insertion care and maintenance: Following the update of our Trust policies to meet the NPSA recommendations for safety, clinical staff involved in nasogastric tube insertion and feeding must be aware of the essential safety standards related to the tubes.

c) Venepuncture & Cannulation: A study day that covers the practical and theoretical knowledge required to commence your learning programme for the skills of venepuncture and cannulation. **E learning must be completed via clinicalskills.net after registering and before the course date.

d) Venepuncture & Cannulation (e-learning only): This e-learning only is for candidates who have recent experience in either venepuncture or cannulation and can provide evidence of prior learning & skills, deemed acceptable by their manager and/or the clinical skills team. For new starters, this e-learning should be completed within one month of joining to enable you to continue practicing venepuncture and/or cannulation. **Please follow the link to request a place on one of the course dates.

e) Intravenous Drug Administration This study day focuses on the main aspects of intravenous drug administration including practical elements, management of IV lines, accountability, fluid management and infection control. **An IV Drug Administration' e-learning must be completed via e learning for health (e-Lfh portal) prior to the course date.

There is a practical workshop in the afternoon. Please follow the link to request a place on one of the course dates. **E learning must be completed via clinicalskills.net after registering and before the course date.

k) Adult CVAD refresher course: This course is designed for staff who have undergone previous training in CVAD, but a record of competence has lapsed, and you need an update on current practice. **E learning must be completed via clinicalskills.net after registering and before the course date.

l) Adult Tracheostomy Course  Please contact the CCOT team for further information. This one day course is primarily aimed at nurses who work in the Emergency departments, acute assessment medical units, neurological and respiratory wards.
