Information for researchers
The Research Governance Review Process is used to assess the eligibility of research projects for NHS permission (R&D Approval). The Department of Health Research Governance Framework (2005) stipulates that all NHS research activity must obtain NHS Permission (R&D Approval) before it can commence. The Research Governance Review Process is managed by the Trust Research & Development Support Office.

How do we achieve high quality research?
All research undertaken within NHS organisations must meet strict standards, which are outlined in the Department of Health NHS Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care (2005).
To achieve these standards each research project is carefully assessed against a clear set of governance criteria and where necessary has been approved by regulatory bodies such as the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the National Research Ethics Services (NRES).
This ensures that our research achieves high scientific and ethical standards required for the benefit of patients.

NHS Coordinated System for NHS Permission (CSP)
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) UK Clinical Research Network Portfolio comprises studies which are supported by NIHR clinical research networks and NIHR funding partners. Studies adopted into the NIHR portfolio are automatically eligible for NIHR research infrastructure funding.
NIHR Portfolio research is supported by London (North West) Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN). The Trust fully operates the NHS Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permission (CSP), which is used to approve NIHR portfolio adopted studies.
Research Passport Scheme
The NIHR Research Passport Scheme facilitates arrangements for staff wishing to undertake research within the NHS. This scheme simplifies procedures for issuing honorary research contracts and letters of access to NHS and University-employed research staff. For further guidance please contact the Research & Development Support Office.
