The first ever North West London Perinatal Mental Health conference welcomed over 100 healthcare professionals and maternity service users. Taking place in March, the conference was organised and hosted by the Perinatal Mental Health Community Education Provider Network (PNMH CEPN).

The conference, held at St Paul’s Centre in Hammersmith, welcomed a number of high profile speakers in the field of perinatal mental health, including Dr Margaret Oates OBE, a nationally recognised perinatal psychiatrist, as well as Clare Dolman from Bipolar UK, who spoke about women’s experiences of perinatal mental health services. Local experts also shared their knowledge on the topic, with West Middlesex University Hospital’s recently appointed Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist, Dr Lucinda Green, speaking about perinatal mental health care within the community setting.

The conference also included oral and poster presentations and a GP audit competition, all of which were judged on the day and winners announced in a prize giving ceremony with Dr Tony Burch from Health Education England North West London (HEENWL).

The winning oral presentation came from the Homerton Mother and Baby Unit – Dr Maryam Parisaei discussed Obstetric and Neonatal outcomes of women admitted antenatally to a Mother and Baby Unit due to significant mental health illness. Prizes were also handed to Dr Hannah Slevin in the GP category, to Jane Dickens and Lisa Milne in the Allied Health Care Professionals category, and to Abbie Wickham for her poster presentation.

Julia Lidderdale, Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Midwife from West Middlesex University Hospital and PNMH CEPN educator, said: “We were delighted to see so many healthcare professionals and maternity service users in attendance at our conference and we had a great response to our presentations. Margaret Oates and Clare Dolman were fantastic speakers and we are very grateful to them for helping us spread awareness and advice on such an important area of maternity healthcare.”
