West Middlesex University Hospital shortlisted for prestigious Student Nursing Award

11 March 2016

Staff at West Middlesex University Hospital are celebrating this week after being shortlisted in the Student Placement of the Year – Hospital category at the 2016 Student Nursing Times Awards.

Nominated for their Syon 1 Ward placement, West Middlesex University Hospital works exclusively with Bucks New University (BNU) in providing placement opportunities for pre-registration nursing students from the adult, child and mental health field of nursing. Syon 1 is a busy, emergency surgical ward with 30 beds. It offers placement opportunities to nursing students from BNU from all of their pre-registration adult nursing programmes.

The Student Placement of the Year category is looking for an exceptional hospital-based environment which demonstrates excellence in student support from the management team and mentor, integrating the student into the team, use of hands-on teaching skills, developing and upholding the professionalism of nurses and a culture that inspires, enthuses and motivates students. This award seeks to recognise those hospital wards and environments that manage the anxieties attached to going on placement by providing a structured learning environment that helps students flourish.

On being shortlisted, Annette Lloyd, Matron for Surgery at West Middlesex, commented: “Being shortlisted for this national award is a credit to the whole team on Syon Ward who work hard to provide our nursing students with the best possible start to their nursing career. Ali Kitson, Ward Manager and Denise Alcock, Sister, work tirelessly to ensure all our students feel welcome and supported and we are all thrilled to have received this recognition.”

The Student Nursing Times Awards are the only awards to celebrate the very best in student nurses and nurse education. The Syon 1 team will find out if they are winners on 28 April when the award ceremony takes place.
