West Mid teaching day welcomes over 100 medical students

On Saturday 16 January, over 100 medical students from Imperial College London gave up half of their weekend to attend a teaching day run by West Middlesex University Hospital’s Orthopaedic team.

The ever popular teaching day has been a regular date in the diary for the last ten years since its inception by Mr Ali Rahmaty, Orthopaedic Associate Specialist. It has since established itself as an integral part of students’ exam preparation. Now led by Mr Victor Babu, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, the final year students who attended this year were keen to learn any extra gems of knowledge from our experts.

Mr Babu explains: “We see the students just before their exams so it’s really a case of fine tuning what they already know and helping them to prepare. It’s quite a long and intense day with a mixture of didactic learning, Q&As and practical sessions with equipment and models. A lot of doctors of all levels of seniority from within the department also give up their time to help out, so it really is a team effort and we’re delighted to see so many students come back each year.”

Mr Chris Huber, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon said: “Here at West Mid we receive medical students on placements throughout the year, and we always get good feedback in Orthopaedics but the hospital on the whole is also very well rated for training. We want to maintain and improve the strong reputation we already hold in this area and holding teaching days like this is great. It brings the whole team together, from junior doctors, middle grades and consultants and it’s fantastic to see the students so keen to learn and going out of their way to attend on a Saturday.”
