West Middlesex University Hospital Consultant, Dr Anjan Chakrabarty, received the Teaching Excellence Award from Imperial College London’s School of Medicine in recognition of all his hard work and efforts put into teaching paediatric students. When asked about the award, Dr Chakrabarty said “It was an honour to be a part of event like this; it was especially warming when I discovered it was all past students I had taught who nominated me for this award. Receiving good feedback from my students means that I must be doing a good job teaching and mentoring them, which is something I aim for with all my students”.

Dr Chakrabarty is clearly a role model for all doctors both in training and qualified to look up to and follow his methods of teaching. His motto is: to teach well is to secure a future of well taught and educated doctors and a healthy society. Even on his days off he makes special efforts to teach them and always tries to encourage junior doctors to do something on a ward individually as good practice for their future career.

Dr Chakrabarty, who has a history of teaching students and junior doctors at other hospital trusts, thinks that our medical students today require extra support from their senior peers at all teaching hospitals and  he is passionate about teaching the next generation of doctors not only the medical knowledge needed but also moral lessons to help them in their career. He said “I may not be able to teach someone to be a good person but I do advocate that empathy, charisma and manners will put you in good stead with patients and indeed any person you encounter in life.”
