A decision has been taken by the Trust to secure the stairwells around the atria, effectively making them for staff use only.

From Monday February 11, all patients and visitors will need to use the escalators and lifts to travel through the hospital and staff will use the stairs via swipe card access.

Card readers have been installed on either side of each of the four stairwells (excluding the A&E staircase which will be available to patients and visitors who are unable to travel by lift).

From February 11 2008, the stairs will be secured and all staff ID cards will be able to access these doors.
