£3m gift received to help create new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

25 October 2017

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and CW+ have received a transformational gift of £3 million from the Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation towards the Critical Care Campaign.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and CW+ have received a transformational gift of £3 million from the Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation towards the Critical Care Campaign.

This gift will help create the Khoo Teck Puat Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The new facility will be a state-of-the-art redeveloped 42-cot NICU designed to care for babies born from 23 weeks. This major redevelopment will allow staff to treat for an additional 150 critically ill babies every year in a world-class patient-centred environment, while at the same time providing better facilities for families and loved ones.

The Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation focuses on funding medical research and facilities, promoting education and supporting the underprivileged, particularly children. The Foundation has previously supported several children’s medical centres in the UK but this is their first gift to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Lesley Watts (Chief Executive) said: “We are so very grateful to the Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation for this wonderful gift. As a Foundation Trust we currently deliver more than 10,000 babies every year, with more families than ever before choosing to have their babies at our hospitals. This demand on our maternity services necessitates the need for the very best care and intensive care facilities for when babies are born too soon or in immediate need of our help. This generous donation will help us create an outstanding new facility for the very sickest babies and their families.”

Chris Chaney (Chief Executive, CW+) said: “Having met many families who have spent time on our NICU, it is clear that the quality of our current facilities can often exacerbate what is already an incredibly difficult time for parents. This partnership and the generosity of the Khoo Teck Puat UK Foundation will enable us to create a new Unit which brings together the latest advances in clinical design and technology to create an environment which matches the already outstanding care delivered each day by our clinical staff.”

The Khoo Teck Puat Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will open in 2020 with building work commencing next year.
